A Ponder Slice ( for the Lord’s Day, 02/28/10)

A Scripture to Ponder:

“God is our refuge snd strength,a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way….though the mountains tremble at its swelling….be still and know that I am God.”   (Psalm 46:1,3,10)

“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.  And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope, we were saved. Now hope that is seen is no hope. For who hopes for what he sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Rom.8:22-25)

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines.  These are but the beginning of birth pains.”   (Mark 13:8)

Questions to Ponder:

Do earthquakes demonstrate the sovereignty of God, the brokennesss of the world, or both?  In what way can earthquakes be a cause for hope  — and even a means of considering the promises of Jesus’ gospel?

A Prayer to Pray

Sovereign Lord, we don’t understand the how or why of earthquakes and tsunamis, like the world awoke to yesterday.  Our hearts break for the devatstation that affects so many people and the fear that grips so many hearts.  The world is a hard place on so many levels.  Oh, Jesus, You are our only Hope.  You stand strong now– faithful to bring peace in the midst of terror and rest to souls weary of the mess.  But even more, You will stand strong when the earth gives its final gasp and is no more.  You will still stand.  And so we hold to you with our life and hope in You for all things.  We’re so grateful and pray amen in your overcoming name.
