Are you overwhelmed?
Every so often, especially in moments of high stress, deep pain, wide disappointment, or long suffering, it is helpful to remember that you were not built to handle life on earth. You are, along with every person on this planet, remarkably small and vulnerable in the face of this broken world.
But your smallness can become your best source of strength. For as small and vulnerable as you are, your God is immense and utterly sovereign in all things. He is in charge of your life and the sweep of history. He is the author of the Story you’re living, the only One who “knows the end from the beginning” (Is. 46:10) , Who intends “good and not evil” (Jer. 29:11-12) and ‘accomplishes His purpose for [you]” (Ps. 57:2), because He loves you with an everlasting love (Jer.31:3) and proved it with a bloody cross and empty tomb.
The One who knows you best and loves you most is King of the angel armies. He is the One who hung planets in orbit and set fiery stars in inky space. There are multiple billions of those stars. On a clear summer night, the sheer number of starlight pinpoints is astonishing. There are so many tiny specks, each one beaming light that traveled across the universe for years to bounce against our optical nerves, that our eyes can’t focus on them. There are so many that one would think one star might get lost in the vastness.
To whom then will you compare me,
that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name,
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power
not one is missing. (Is. 40:25-26)
Not one is missing because the Holy One knows right where they are. He knows and calls each one by name: Bob. Twinkle. Michelle. Rick. Little. Paula. N90Z-34. Whatever.
Your God knows right where you are, too. He knows and calls you by name. And because He is infinitely strong and in control, you don’t have to be. Embracing your smallness means you can rest secure.
So, take a few minutes to look up, and remember that you are known, loved and sustained by this God of heaven’s stars, Who is stronger and more overwhelming than any earthly circumstance.
